Candidate biography

Writing about myself and my career in under 200 words is a challenge for someone who loves to talk! I qualified in 2009 from the Royal Veterinary College/Middlesex University, and so much has changed in those short (!) 16 years, my passion for supporting RVNs and our profession has remained constant. As someone very wise once told me, we’re like a stick of rock: RVNs through and through.

Originally from Birmingham, I now live in Co Antrim and delighted and so proud to be the course director for Northern Ireland’s first veterinary degree at Ulster University. As a small animal RVN, adapting to the mixed and farm animal focus of practice outside England has been a steep but enjoyable learning experience!

Most of my career has been dedicated to teaching aspiring RVNs, and there’s nothing more fulfilling than helping students achieve their goals and earn that coveted badge.

Outside work, I enjoy exploring my creative side through fashion, design, and home décor (jazzy wallpaper is my jam!). You’ll also often find me exploring all that Northern Ireland has to offer with our rescue Frenchie, Stella.

Candidate statement

Why do you want to stand to be a member of VN Council?

Having had a varied career in veterinary nursing I’ve experienced firsthand the highs, lows, and quirky moments that come with the profession, but it’s clear that RVN’s can make all the difference. I am excited to stand for election because I am passionate about our career as veterinary nurses. I believe in the importance of ensuring high standards of care, supporting ongoing professional development, and promoting best practices in animal welfare.

Living in Northern Ireland has also given me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities we face in the field, and I’m eager to bring those insights to the Council. I’m committed to supporting our profession’s standards, advocating for ongoing professional development, and ensuring we continue to be recognised for the vital work we do.

With my experience I aim to contribute to shaping policies that elevate the profession, support colleagues, and ultimately improve outcomes for both animals and the communities we serve.

I am motivated to stand as a member of the Veterinary Nursing Council because I am deeply passionate about advancing our profession.

What do you think you can bring to VN Council?

A wealth of experience, a commitment to excellence, and a passion for advancing the veterinary nursing profession. With over 12 years of teaching experience and a career encompassing clinical practice, education, and leadership, I bring a comprehensive understanding of the profession from multiple perspectives.

I am committed to fostering collaboration and innovation, focusing on addressing key challenges facing the profession and ensuring that the voices of veterinary nurses are heard and valued. My participation in professional organisations, ongoing professional development, and contributions to initiatives such as VN Futures reflect my readiness to make meaningful contributions to the council.

It would be a privilege to bring my experience, skills, and dedication to the Veterinary Nursing Council and contribute to shaping the future of our profession.

What relevant experience do you have?

My experience spans over a decade of diverse roles within veterinary nursing, education, and leadership. My experience spans over a decade of diverse roles within veterinary nursing, education, and leadership. From starting as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, I gained hands-on clinical expertise in busy practices, including emergency and out-of-hours care. These roles sharpened my practical skills and ability to thrive under pressure. Transitioning to education, I’ve spent over 12 years shaping future veterinary nurses as a lecturer and Programme Manager. Whether leading programmes or supporting students, I’ve developed curricula, mentored students, and worked collaboratively to elevate academic standards. My specialist qualifications in oncology and a focus on professional development have further broadened my expertise, enabling me to address the complex needs of both patients and practitioners.

In short, my career has been a blend of practical, academic, and leadership experience, underpinned by a commitment to the advancement of veterinary nursing. And while I take my work seriously, I always bring a collaborative and approachable attitude to the table.

In addition to my experience and qualifications, I bring a genuine passion for veterinary nursing and a dedication to fostering its growth as a profession. My career has been guided by a strong belief in the importance of collaboration, innovation, and supporting others to achieve their full potential—whether they are students, colleagues, or members of the wider veterinary community.

I thrive on engaging with challenges and finding practical, forward-thinking solutions that benefit both practitioners and the animals in their care. Being part of VN Council and being part of the contribution to key conversations about the future of veterinary nursing, including workforce development and professional identity would be an absolutely privilege and career highlight..

Ultimately, I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change and to help shape a profession that is both rewarding and sustainable for future generations. I would be honored to bring this dedication, perspective, and collaborative spirit to the Veterinary Nursing Council.
