Registration is granted based on a vet or vet nurse’s:

  • educational qualifications, and
  • continued ethical and professional good standing.

Registration categories

There are a number of different registration categories for veterinary surgeons. For more information on these, please see our registration categories page.

Requirements to practise

As a regulator, we have to publish certain information about requirements to practise in the UK. This is an obligation under the Professional Qualifications Act 2022.

Qualifications

In order to graduate as a veterinary surgeon or nurse in the UK you must hold one of the following qualification types:

  • Veterinary surgeons - Veterinary degree
  • Veterinary nurses - Higher Education (HE) qualification or Further Education (FE) qualification
