Under care: January deadline reminder for new anti-parasitics guidance
21 December 2023
Following the implementation of our new 'under care' guidance on 1 September 2023, we would like to remind veterinary professionals that the remaining element of this guidance, which concerns the prescription of anti-parasitic prescription-only veterinary medicines (POM-Vs), will come into effect on 12 January 2024.
Following feedback from the profession at the time, we decided to delay this specific guidance to allow more time for veterinary practices to achieve compliance with Veterinary Medicines Directorate rules on including within patient records prescriptions for POM-V anti-parasitics.
Although there is no specific form for a prescription within patient records, it needs to include enough information so that the person supplying against it knows what to do, whether they are another veterinary surgeon, a veterinary nurse, a suitably-qualified person or a lay member of staff.
Detailed information and learning resources about the 'under care' guidance is available on our 'Under care' page, including a series of FAQs.
In particular, FAQ 15 provides advice about prescribing POM-V antiparasitics and what information to include for prescriptions written in clinical records.
