Response to CMA review announcement
7 September 2023
We have noted the announcement from the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) today that they have launched a review into the veterinary services market for household pets.
The review seems set to include some areas where we do have jurisdiction, such out-of-hours care and communication with clients, and some where we don’t, for example, in relation to pricing and business structure.
The review seems set to include some areas where we do have jurisdiction, such out-of-hours care and communication with clients, and some where we don’t, for example, in relation to pricing and business structure.
With regards business structure, we have been calling for mandatory regulation of practices for some time, as part of our proposals for new veterinary legislation.
We will of course support the CMA with any information that they need to progress the review, and would encourage anyone who has a view to respond to their questionnaires.
We feel it is really important that as many different voices as possible are heard from across the pet-owning public and those who work in the veterinary services sector.
