RCVS welcomes new President

Professor Richard Halliwell, an academic with a wealth of European and international experience, was elected 128^th president of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) at its Annual General Meeting today.

Richard has spent many years of his professional life in Edinburgh at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, part of the University of Edinburgh, most recently as Dean.  He is one of the world’s leading authorities in veterinary dermatology and immune mediated diseases in animals. 

During his Presidential year, he hopes to bring a number of initiatives in the fields of undergraduate veterinary education, practice standards and further education qualifications to fruition.

Professor Halliwell said: “As with other professions, the veterinary profession is facing huge challenges ahead.  We are not shying away from these challenges, but living up to them and shaping a profession with a structure and future to take us well into the 21^st century.  I hope that members will assist me and my colleagues by giving us the benefit of their advice and their ideas.”

He hopes to spend the little free time he has left with his wife, Jenny and his shihtzus, travelling and visiting his two daughters.
