RCVS boosts careers outreach with National Careers Week and STEM Learning partnerships
29 January 2025
We're excited to be partnering with National Careers Week (NCW) and STEM Learning in 2025 to raise awareness of veterinary careers among career advisers and students, and encourage young people from underrepresented backgrounds to consider a veterinary career. As part of these partnerships, we have two events coming up in March.
Join us at the NCW virtual fair
National Careers Week (NCW) runs from Monday 3 to Saturday 8 March 2025. It focuses on promoting careers guidance and the work of careers advisers. During the week, we'll be taking part in the NCW’s virtual careers fair to provide information on veterinary careers options; and we're also the official sponsor for 8 March.
But our partnership extends beyond the careers fair. Throughout 2025, our content will be appearing in NCW’s magazine, e-newsletters and social media accounts.

In March, we'll also be partnering with STEM Learning for British Science Week (Friday 7 to Sunday 16 March), reaching out directly to primary school children with a live, online, 45-minute session in which veterinary professionals, veterinary nurse students and recent graduates will share insights about their careers.
Rosie Powley, RCVS Outreach and Engagement Manager, said: "We are really excited about our partnerships with both National Careers Week and STEM Learning this year and are looking forward to talking to both careers advisers and school-age children about veterinary and veterinary nursing careers and the breadth of options open to those with veterinary qualifications.
"Throughout 2025, we will be focusing on promoting veterinary careers and widening participation, with a focus on reaching out to groups that are underrepresented in the veterinary professions, including boys and men, those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and some ethnic and religious minorities. This also aligns with our ongoing veterinary workforce project, particularly around raising the profile of the professions and the range of career paths that are available.
"We also have further direct outreach sessions planned with science teachers and secondary school pupils later in the year and are committed to promoting veterinary careers as far and wide as possible.
"We would like to thank the vet schools and groups such as Animal Aspirations, a student-led group showcasing veterinary students and professionals from diverse backgrounds, for their input into this work. This has included providing information about their own outreach programmes and spokespeople to talk passionately about veterinary careers."
Sign up for our virtual primary school careers session
Attention all primary schools! We're hosting a live, virtual veterinary careers session during British Science Week (7-16 March 2025). This free session, run in partnership with STEM Learning, is specifically designed for Key Stage 2 students.
Join us for "Exploring Veterinary Careers: Caring for Animals Big and Small" on 11 March from 10am to 10.45am.
During the session, pupils will hear from our student and recent graduate panel about:
- What a typical day for vet nurses and vets looks like
- The skills and subjects useful for a veterinary career
- The pros and cons of a veterinary career
The pupils will also have the opportunity to ask the panel questions!
