New RCVS EMS National Booking Database set to streamline placement process
30 October 2024
In early 2025, we are due to launch our new RCVS EMS (extra-mural studies) National Booking Database and are looking for veterinary practices and workplaces to sign up.
The database, which was created in response to feedback around how to improve accessibility of EMS placements and the overall EMS experience, has been developed as a free resource to support both students and placement providers. In addition to streamlining the EMS placement process, the database has also been designed to ensure that providers and students alike are able to align expectations and get the most out of placements.
The platform will allow current and prospective providers to list placements with key details, such as type, location, expected case load, and transport links. This structure will enable students to easily search for and filter placements based on their specific needs, simplifying the matching process. Additionally, students will be able to communicate directly with providers through the platform, making it easier to address any questions.
We have received feedback from students that EMS is a hugely valuable part of their undergraduate studies, but it can also provide multiple benefits to providers too. EMS providers contribute significantly to the future of the veterinary professions. By hosting students, practices offer real-world experiences that enhance students' readiness for their careers, while also gaining fresh perspectives and energy in return. Relationships developed during placements can also lead to lasting professional connections, as students may return to work at their EMS practice post-graduation.
We are committed to making this database the central resource for EMS placements in the UK and are looking to populate it with as many providers as possible before it formally launches. If you are an existing provider interested in listing your placement on our platform, or are interested in learning more about how to become a new provider, please get it touch at [email protected].
Alternatively, you can also find us at London Vet Show, where we will be hosting a session entitled 'An Introduction to the RCVS EMS National Booking Database: a free resource for all EMS providers and UK veterinary students'. Find out more about the session on the London Vet Show website.
