VCCP

Date: Tuesday 24th September 2024

Details

Join us for an in-depth discussion on RCVS Veterinary Clinical Career Pathways - your input matters!

RCVS Council has recently approved an ambitious project to expand and diversify the career options available to veterinary surgeons working in clinical practice. This focus group will consider the objectives associated with workstream one ‘to develop a curriculum and implementation proposals for Veterinary GP specialty training’ and workstream three ‘Developing flexible routes for specialist training’

We are currently looking for input from practitioners working in clinical practice from a variety of backgrounds who are keen to feed into our clinical pathways work, and who were unable to attend our in-person events held earlier in the year.

RCVS is hosting a series of shorter online sessions held at lunchtime or early evening, aimed at practitioners unable to take time away from practice to attend the full-day stakeholder events. We will also hold several online focus groups, for stakeholders from different types of practice but for this session we are particularly keen to hear feedback from RCVS Advanced Practitioners (APs) and Specialists.

Focus Group Objectives

Participants will hear about the proposals for the further development of veterinary clinical career pathways, the individual workstreams and any co-dependencies between them. Following this introduction, participants will discuss several specific questions in small groups, which will help the RCVS address the following objectives for the project to develop a curriculum for veterinary GP specialty training (workstream 1), the definition of veterinary clinical roles (workstream 2) and developing flexible routes to specialist training (workstream 3):

  • To establish the overarching purpose of the veterinary GP specialty training programme, through consideration of the needs of the workforce, the profession and the scope and focus of veterinary care services. (Workstream 1)
  • To identify the intended learning outcomes of the training in terms of the clinical and professional knowledge, skills and behaviours required to fulfil the role of Specialist in Primary Care / General Practice. (Workstream 1)
  • Consider potential titles for different clinical roles within the proposed framework (Workstream 2)
  • To consider the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of different learning environments for clinical specialty training, with regard to learner support and supervision, access to appropriate clinical content and assessment. (Workstream 3)
  • Explore the barriers faced by vets who felt unable to commit to an internship / residency programme, and how these might be overcome. (workstream 3).

The focus of the day

This event is for stakeholders who want to contribute to the development of a curriculum for specialty training in veterinary primary care, and help us develop flexible routes to specialisation. Our aim is to explore the purpose of the proposed training program for GPs, discuss the potential content of the programme, and consider the learning environments suitable for clinical specialty training. As part of this focus group we will also discuss barriers faced by vets who felt unable to commit to an internship / residency programme, and how these might be overcome.
