Men's Mental Health
In this MMI Campfire Chat...
According to Mental Health Foundation, in England around 1 in 8 men has a common mental health problem. However, these are only the cases which get reported. Research shows many cases go undiagnosed and unreported. As Men’s Mental Health Month draws to a close, we’re joined by three brilliant panellists for an inclusive conversation open to all genders about men’s mental health and the veterinary professions.
Panel Guests
James Russell MRCVS
James Russell graduated from the RVC in 2002, after which he went on to complete a post-graduate diploma in production animal and livestock medicine. He has over 17 years’ experience working in mixed practice and became an independent veterinary consultant in 2018 after 8 years as director at a large veterinary practice in Ashbourne. James was elected President of the British Veterinary Association for 2020/2021.
Throughout a period of great uncertainty during the Covid-19 pandemic and UK lockdown, Mr Russell led on much of the farm, large animal and rural veterinary guidance for members. He is also involved with Vetlife and joined the Vetlife board in January 2020.
James Glass MRCVS
James Glass graduated from the Royal Vet College in London in 1992 and, with his wife Debbie, spent almost 20 years building and running a small animal practice on the edge of the Lake District. In 2018, on the verge of suicide, he was diagnosed with severe depressive disorder and was off work for nine months. He stepped down from clinical work in 2019 and is currently completing an MSc in the psychology and neuroscience of mental health. He wants to encourage colleagues not to suffer in silence if they are struggling with mental health issues as it’s an illness that can affect anyone.
Calum McIntyre
Calum is a current final year student at the University of Edinburgh and President of the Association of Veterinary Students (AVS). After two years out before undertaking his studies, Calum has used the skills learnt working in hospitality and other team environments in several roles, both with AVS and on committees at the vet school in Edinburgh. With the objective of using his passion and platform to maximise students' experiences, Calum has been active in establishing initiatives, projects, committees and talks to hopefully benefit his peers.
Still early in his veterinary journey, Calum is looking to the future with an open mind, fully aware of the huge potential that a veterinary degree offers. He hopes to enter clinical practice, both bolstering existing and developing new skills, before finding a niche that suits his ever-evolving interests within veterinary medicine.
