Apply for Lay Member role on the Fellowship Science Advisory Panel
The Fellowship Science Advisory Panel (FSAP) are seeking to recruit a Lay Member to join the panel.
Role
In 2018, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) decided the Science Advisory Panel should be placed under the remit of the RCVS Fellowship.
The Fellowship Science Advisory Panel is responsible for reviewing the evidence presented to the group and providing scientific advice and guidance to the Fellowship and the wider profession on topical issues.
The Fellowship Science Advisory Panel consists of subgroups formed on the basis of area of expertise, and a main panel which will review the research by the subgroups to make recommendations and advise on scientific issues relevant to recognised veterinary practice.
We are seeking to appoint a lay member to the panel. This role will complement existing panel members comprising of veterinary professionals in practice, academia and research.
Membership of the FSAP will provide an opportunity for an experienced individual to make an important contribution to research and the future of evidence-based veterinary medicine.
Time commitments
The FSAP will review new requests on scientific topics when presented by the College, if within the remit of the panel as set out in the Terms of Reference.
The FSAP will meet to discuss the requests put forward to the panel as well as review the work undertaken by the panel’s subgroups.
It is expected that the FSAP would meet three times a year for the general meetings, with exceptions for any urgent requests submitted.
Appointment to the role will be for three years and will be renewable after application to the panel.
Compensation
Post holders can claim loss of earnings allowance.
Scope of the post
Under the lead of the Chair, members will apply their specific experience to the consideration of proposals received from the College and reviewing the work undertaken by the panel’s subgroups.
Specific tasks for the panel
To consider proposals submitted to the panel by the College and make recommendations in conjunction with other FSAP panel members, on whether the proposals requested by the College are scientifically sound, and that legal and ethical issues have been adequately addressed.
To attend meetings of the FSAP to discuss proposals and the work of the subgroups.
Criteria for the role
- Experience of professional regulation, and a background in science.
- Experience in reviewing proposals for scientific review.
- Enthusiasm for evidence-based veterinary medicine and the advancement of veterinary science.
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work to deadlines
