Biography
Michael qualified from Liverpool University in 1987 and started practising in Harrogate in an avian and small animal referral practice.
After five years he moved to Cheshire and set up practice at Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic, focusing in the veterinary care of exotic pets, zoo and wildlife patients. The practice eventually employed five full-time veterinary surgeons and had an 80% non-domestic animal case load.
Michael started a commercial laboratory at the practice concentrating solely on zoo and wildlife species providing services to the majority of zoos in the UK.
For many years the practice provided all the veterinary services to the RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre.
Michael has researched and lectured extensively on aspects of avian veterinary medicine and surgery both internationally and in the UK.
Michael’s main interest is in avian medicine and he was an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine (avian) from 2007-2012.
Michael was awarded the RCVS Diploma of Fellowship by thesis in 2006 for his work on Calcium Metabolism in Grey Parrots and is a recipient of the BVA William Hunter medal for his paper on UV-B light in birds.
Michael has been a Claims Consultant for the Veterinary Defence Society since 2007.
He is a past Treasurer and recent past President of the BVZS and the current Zebra Foundation Treasurer.
Michael is Chair of the Companion Animal Sector Council.
