Biography

Dr Kate Allen is an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Equine Sports Medicine and Associate Professor of Equine Sports Medicine. She has been based at Bristol Veterinary School for over 20 years.

Kate’s primary clinical research focus is to improve the health, welfare and performance of horses engaged in sport or competition, particularly in the area of equine sports medicine. There are unique health and welfare challenges affecting the performance horse, and unique ethical challenges affecting the sports medicine veterinary surgeon. Kate has advanced novel research initiatives in emerging areas of equine sports medicine. Kate’s research has identified the multifaceted challenges faced by equine sports medicine veterinary surgeons.

Throughout her time at Bristol Veterinary School, Kate has taught widely across all years of the veterinary science programme. She is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She supervises a pedagogical research program entitled ‘Preparing for Equine Practice’ designed to provide new research to develop an innovative and evidence-base led equine curriculum.

Kate is currently the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion co-lead at Bristol Veterinary School, and is responsible for identifying and actioning EDI issues concerning both staff and students.

Kate is a member of the University of Bristol Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Board, and the veterinary clinical research ethics lead.
