Biography
Justine graduated from Bristol in 2008, having completed an intercalated degree in Veterinary Pathology at the RVC in 2006. She worked in mixed practice before gaining her MSc in Wild Animal Health from the RVC and Zoological Society of London. She went on to work in the Disease Risk Analysis and Health Surveillance team at the Institute of Zoology, London, supporting native species reintroductions and translocations. In 2015 she joined Marwell Zoo, a large conservation-focussed zoo in Hampshire, where she worked as a clinical vet for over eight years, leading the vet team and publishing on zoo animal welfare.
Justine became a Trustee of the Animal Welfare Foundation in 2019, and a RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine in 2020. She joined the officer team of the British Veterinary Association in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. Justine was BVA President from 2021-2, leading the profession with her theme of environmental sustainability, helping to develop policies and resources to empower veterinary professionals to work more sustainably. Justine became a Director of Vet Sustain in late 2023 and joined the RSPCA as their Head Vet – Wildlife and Exotics in November 2023, where she works to improve wildlife and exotic welfare and support the veterinary professions.
Justine is passionate about sustainability and animal welfare across species and continues to champion One Health and the interplay between the health of humans, animals and the environment.
