Biography
John graduated from Cambridge University in 1984. After 6 years in first opinion practice he undertook further clinical training Cambridge where he gained his FRCVS in 1993. John was the appointed as lecturer in Small Animal Surgery at Liverpool University and became Head of Small Animal Studies in 1997. He became an RCVS recognised specialist in Small Animal Surgery in 1995 and a Diplomate of the ECVS in 1997. In 2000 John, founded a referral practice in Cheshire that he headed up for over 12 years. In 2016 he joined Vets Now as a clinical surgeon in the Manchester Referral Hospital and as National Surgical Lead. In that latter role John had a key part in developing online QI and auditing processes across multiple hospital sites. In October 2021 he was appointed National Surgical Lead within the UK Referral Division of IVC Evidensia. John is passionate about the introduction, understanding and development of non technical skills and human factors training and their importance in reducing error within the referral community.
He is active on the CPD lecture circuit and regularly speaks in the UK, Europe and the USA. In 2000 he was awarded the BSAVA Simon award for contributions to small animal surgery. John has authored chapters and edited manuals for BSAVA and contributed to the second edition of Tobias and Johnston's Textbook of Veterinary Surgery: Small Animals. John became an Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool in 2012
