James graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2010 before completing an internship and residency in small animal internal medicine at the Royal Veterinary College. He received the diplomas of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2016. During his residency, he conducted research on immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia in dogs, receiving the Postgraduate International Canine Health Award in 2015. After this, he completed a PhD at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, University of Oxford studying the impact of chronic inflammatory diseases on bone marrow haematopoiesis. Currently, James is a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Fellow at Columbia University in New York, where he is studying molecular mechanisms underlying leukaemia development.
