He then spent three years as a dermatology resident before establishing a referral practice in dermatology.

He worked for 13 years as a referral dermatologist, running a peripatetic clinic (1990-2003). This involved clinical work, clinical research, consultancy with pharmaceutical and pet food companies and teaching.

He holds an RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Dermatology and a European Diploma in this discipline. He was an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology from the inception of the scheme until joining the Civil Service in 2003.

From 2003, until his retirement in 202, he was a Home Office Inspector working to protect animal welfare under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.

He has published papers, articles and book chapters and lectured at scientific and clinical meetings throughout the world. He has authored or edited five textbooks and clinical guides. He also served as editor and then the editor-in-chief of the journal Veterinary Dermatology.
