Biography
Alys has a BSc in Zoology (Manchester University), MSc in Veterinary Parasitology (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine) and gained her BVSc from Liverpool University.
She worked as an LVI/ OVS in Norfolk then joined the Veterinary Pathology Department of Edinburgh University as HBLB lecturer in Neuropathology. As well as teaching undergraduates, she worked on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, equine peripheral neuropathies, and grass sickness. She was also responsible for biopsies/necropsies from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. She joined the Pathology Department of Charles River Edinburgh in 1998 and was appointed Director of Pathology in 2005.
Alys is actively involved in training veterinary pathologists and is past Chair of the RCPath Board of Examiners for Vet Path. She is a Foundation Faculty member of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree on Integrative Mouse Pathology teaching at the University of Copenhagen BRIC. Her specialist interests are non-human primate pathology, rabbit pathology, transgenic mouse pathology, digital pathology, medical device safety testing, and neuropathology of all species.
She is the author of several book chapters on both Neuropathology and Rabbit pathology. She was co-editor of Boorman’s Pathology of the Laboratory Rat and is currently working on a companion series of books. The volume on Laboratory Primate Pathology to be published in 2020, with volumes on Laboratory Swine and Laboratory Rabbits to follow.
