Dr Alessandro Seguino

Protection of the public’s health has been the main reason Alessandro studied Veterinary Medicine and specialised in food safety, and has underpinned his entire professional career since graduation. His extensive experience in working for the government and academia, and the constant interaction with the food industry allowed him to join and bring together all the knowledge, skills and expertise he has acquired throughout more than 20 years of engagement in different areas of Veterinary Public Health (VPH). After graduating in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Naples, his main background has been in government work within the Italian State Veterinary Services and after within the Food Standards Agency of the UK. In 2009, he was hired by the University of Edinburgh, to lead the VPH development at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies where he is Chair of VPH Education. He achieved the highest grade of specialisation in becoming a ‘European and RCVS specialist in VPH’. He has also advanced his pedagogical knowledge and practice by being awarded the Principal Fellowship by the Advance Higher Education. Through leadership in the field, his vision is to shape the future of VPH education nationally and internationally in a sustainable way. His strategic approach to doing this is by promoting public health through the prevention of zoonoses and foodborne diseases whilst emphasising the social responsibility that comes from being part of the veterinary profession
